School Based Care

As children move into kindergarten and the formal school years, they enter an exciting period of their lives. Exciting for the children, but sometimes worrisome for parents as they try to make child care arrangements that will minimize the number of changes and disruptions to an already busy day.

We are pleased that S.E.E.D.S has begun to address the growing need for school-based child care. Working collaboratively with both School Boards, we have opened new programmes located within local schools. Recognizing the various needs of families, these programmes offer full-time, part-time, alternate day kindergarten and before and after school care.

ADMISSIONS

Because the programmes have been developed in collaboration with individual schools and school boards, priority is given to children and families of the school and local community. Additionally, we give priority consideration to families who currently have siblings enrolled in our programmes. We encourage all families to arrange a tour of the centre and speak personally with the supervisor and staff before enrolling their children in the programme.

CLASSROOMS

Depending upon the location, the following classrooms are offered in our school-based programmes:

INFANT ROOM: The Infant Room is licensed for 10 children between the ages of 6 weeks and 18 months. We have four teachers working in the Infant Room throughout the day to ensure that we always maintain a 1:3 ratio. The Infant Teachers provide a full programme of activities for the children including regular outdoor play and/or walks around the neighbourhood. The Infant Room daily schedule is extremely flexible to accommodate each child’s regular daily routine for naptime and mealtime.

TODDLER ROOM: The Toddler Room offers care for up to 15 children (18 months to 30 months) and operates at a 1:5 ratio. The programme within the toddler room focuses on helping children develop self-help and social skills while nurturing their growing sense of curiosity.

PRESCHOOL ROOMS: The Preschool Room is licensed for up to 24 children aged 30 months to 44 months and operates at a 1:8 ratio. The Preschool classroom provides a curriculum of activities and learning opportunities to extend children’s developing interests and skills. The preschool classrooms also offer a formal social skills programme based on the Incredible Years’ DINA DINOSAUR SCHOOL.

KINDERGARTEN ROOM: Our kindergarten room is licensed for up to 20 children who are 3.8 to 6 years old and eligible to attend junior or senior kindergarten. The classroom offers programmes for children who attend elementary school on alternate days or full-time care for children who have opted out of the regular school system. There are two full-time educators in the kindergarten classroom to maintain a 1:10 ratio. The kindergarten classroom focuses on building strong literacy and numeracy skills, social competence, self-confidence and independence. The kindergarten classroom’s curriculum includes a formal social skills programme based on the Incredible Years’ DINA DINOSAUR SCHOOL.

SCHOOL-AGE ROOM: S.E.E.D.S offers before and after school care at several locations for children 6 to 12 years. School-age “clubs” are set up to encourage children to have fun after a long day at school. A wide variety of activities are available for children to choose from. As well, quiet areas are set aside for children to relax, unwind or to do homework. These programmes are set up to encourage children to explore, experiment and discover, while building new friendships along the way. We also offer full-day programmes during the Christmas Break, March Break, and Professional Development Days. Weekly camp sessions run during the summer – every week is a different focus with new and exciting activities.

S.E.E.D.S – WEST BAYFIELD is located at the intersection of Ford Street and Livingstone Avenue in West Bayfield Elementary School

S.E.E.D.S – ST. MARGUERITE is located at the end of Kozlov Street off Livingstone Avenue in St. Marguerite d’Youville Elementary School

S.E.E.D.S – ST. PETER’S is located at the intersection of Highway 11 and Ashford Drive in St. Peter’s Secondary School

S.E.E.D.S – HEWITT’S CREEK is located at the intersection of Big Bay Point Road and Sandringham Drive
